"The Philippine StarBall"
International Ballroom Dance Competition in February
Dance is the universal language of man. It is not confined to any one race or country or to any particular period in history. It is an art form that binds together all of humanity. This profound truth led us to organize and host the 1st Philippine Star Ball last February. This major event was a first in Philippine dancing history as the country played host to different world dancing champions enabling the Filipino audience to witness world-class competition that has never been seen locally. The successful staging of the competition has put the Philippines into the map of "must join" competitions among top ranked Competitors and highly respected Adjudicators.
Next year's The Philippine Star Ball which will be held on February 15, 2009 at the prestigious Makati Shangri-la Hotel promises to be a bigger and more exciting event. Aside from the competition, the audience can also look forward to the special performances of the American Smooth Champions, Jonathan Roberts and Valentina, together with former Latin champions Max Koshevnikov and Beata in a "Special Dance Show Spectacular. "
To attract the very best from all over the world and to be at par with competitions in Asia, this major dance event, which is chaired by Michaela "Pinky" Puno, wife of the Philippine Secretary of Interior and Local Government, will again award a total of $140,000 or P7 million in prize money to the winners.
Competitors will show their mastery of the 10 International Dances which include the Latin-American dances of Cha- cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive; and the Standard/ Modern dances such as Slow Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Quick Step.
These dances demonstrate why ballroom dancing is both an art and a sport. All dances require solid grounded footwork, the perfection of technique and balance, and the agility, energy, and stamina of an athlete.
The Philippine StarBall is organized by the Council of United Professional Dance Teachers of the Philippines, Inc. (CUPDTP), a dance teachers' organization headed by Jose Carino. recognized and accredited by the Games and Amusement Board. The CUPDTP is organizing the event in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the First Gentleman's Foundation. The beneficiary is KYTHE, an organization helping children afflicted with cancer.
